How does SERVPRO® inspect for Water Damage?
8/11/2023 (Permalink)
Water Damage can sometimes be noticeable by signs of flooding or puddles in your home. However, sometimes water can be a little tricky to see if it is trapped in walls or floorboards or you experienced mild flooding when you were not in your home. At SERVPRO®, we are thoroughly trained to inspect your commercial or residential property for all of the signs of water damage.
We typically first inspect the exterior of your property to look for standing water outside. We may check your gutters, downspouts, and drainage system to ensure that they are not clogged, backing up water, or need repair. Our team also makes sure that rainwater is being directed to flow away from your home rather than towards it.
After the outdoor inspection, we will come inside and look for signs of water damage. Our professionals use moisture meters and special cameras to detect hidden water behind walls or other surfaces. We will look for any signs of warped wood or walls, mold growth or smells, any common moisture spots that could have water build-up
Our SERVPRO team will check appliances like your dishwasher, sinks, and washing machine. HVAC Systems can also be a problem leading to water damage, so we want to make sure that is working efficiently as well.
SERVPRO® wants to ensure that your home is water damage free before leaving the inspection. If we do detect water and your home needs assistance, we will immediately work with you to schedule our technicians and team to remove all water from your home and make it “Like it never even happened!”
Water Damage from Water Heaters
8/11/2023 (Permalink)
A water heater is an appliance that is designed to heat cold water and, in some cases, store hot water for future use. Dishwashers, washing machines, showers, tubs, and sinks rely on water heaters to heat incoming cold water. They are usually located in your residential or commercial property in the garage or basement. If too much pressure builds in the tank, it will eventually spring a leak and burst, causing excessive flooding in the location where your heater is kept. It is a good idea to keep an eye on your water heater and get it inspected and serviced at least once a year to prevent any malfunctions with the appliance.
SERVPRO is always here to help 24/7, even if you are having issues with flooding and water damage from a water heater in the middle of the night. As soon as you call 610-776-7774, one of our team members will answer the call and ask you questions to determine your situation. We will determine if we need to send our team out immediately, or if you have a preferred time you would like us to arrive and get to work.
We are trained to use specialized equipment to dry all of the water in your home and make it “Like it never even happened”. We are quick, efficient, and keep you informed throughout our entire communication process during your project. If items kept near the water heater are damaged, our contents cleaning team will do their best to restore everything to its original state!

Sump Pump 101
5/17/2023 (Permalink)
What is a Sump Pump?
“Sump Pump” A sump pump is defined as “a pump (as in a basement) to remove accumulations of liquid (such as water) from a sump pit.” These pumps can range in size and there are different types depending on the size of your basement and how likely you are to experience flooding or water damage.
Not all basements need a sump pump, but these are some criteria when deciding if you should purchase one or not.
It is a good idea to invest in a sump pump if:
- You live in a flat area, or location that sits low to the ground
- You live in an area where snow and rain are common
- You live in the basement of a property
- Your property has a basement
- Part of your property is underground
- Your property has a history of floods
- Your basement is continuously wet
In the event of intense storms, flooding, melting snow, or other excessive moisture, these machines work to ensure your home or business remains free of flood and storm water. As much as SERVPRO is always here to help, a sump pump is a huge advantage to hopefully not having to make that phone call to ask for help with water damage.
What Do They Do?
Sump pumps operate by collecting water in a pit beneath the pump. When water reaches a designated point in the pit, the pump begins removing the water to a location outside the property. This process automatically occurs via a float sensor, and the pipes that carry the water away have check valves to ensure the water does not flow back into the property.

Water Damage Signs
4/12/2023 (Permalink)
Water Damage that is trapped in walls can lead to problems like mold growth and damages. However, sometimes it can be hard to tell at first glance. These are some key signs to watch out for to tell if your walls have been affected by water damage.
- One of the first noticeable signs of possible water-damaged walls is peeling paint and wallpaper. If the inside of a wall contains excessive water, paint and wallpaper can lose their adhesion and start to come off or bubble
- Any stains, discoloration (typically a yellow-brown color), and warping can be major indicators of underlying water damage within and around walls
- Check for softened drywall. If you suspect water-damaged walls in a particular area, be sure to press against those areas and see if the wall buckles or sinks inward
- Visible mold growth is a sure sign of water damaged walls
- Musty smells and overly damp air can be a sign that there may be water trapped in your walls as well
- White stains that appear chalk-like, called efflorescence, are another sign of water moving through walls in your basement, which appear after the water’s evaporated\

SERVPRO of Allentown and Western Lehigh County wants to provide a list of safety tips for before, during, and after a flood.
Before
- Make sure any cracks or openings to the building are sealed securely.

During
- Move any valuables or items that you don't want damaged to a higher area.
- Shut off electrical, furnace, gas and water, and disconnect appliances if safe.

After
- Clean, disinfect and dry every flood-contaminated room.

A common water damage scenario is sewage backups. Below are the three types of contaminated water:
Category 1: "Clean water"
Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated immediately, the water can turn into a category 2 or category 3.
Category 2: "Gray Water"
Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Be aware this water may contain bacteria and viruses
Examples include:
- Washing machine overflow
- Toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces
- Dishwasher overflow
Category 3: "Black Water"
Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
Examples include:
- Flooding from rivers or streams
- Water from beyond the toilet trap
- Water from the toilet bowl with feces
- Standing water that has begun to support microbial growth
Water contaminated with sewage backup should be considered an emergency situation and dealt with as quickly as possible. SERVPRO of Western Lehigh County professionals are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are water damage restoration specialists with specialized training, equipment and protective gear to safely restore your home or business.

How to Classify a Water Damage
8/12/2020 (Permalink)
Classes of water losses are determined by the rate of evaporation based on the type of materials affected by water damage to your property. Determining the Class of Water is an important first step for SERVPRO of Western Lehigh County, and will determine the amount and type of equipment utilized to restore your business. There are four IICRC water damage classifications, they are as follows:
Class 1 - Slow Evaporation Rate
Water losses that affect only part of a room or area, or losses with lower permanence/porosity materials (e.g., plywood, particle board, structural wood, vinyl composition tile or VCT, concrete). Little or no wet carpet or cushion is present. Minimum moisture is absorbed by materials, releasing moisture slowly.
Class 2 - Fast Evaporation Rate
Water losses that affect an entire room or carpet and cushion. Water has wicked up walls 12" - 24". There is moisture remaining in structural materials (e.g., plywood, particle board, structural wood, concrete).
Class 3 - Fastest Evaporation Rate
Water may have come from overhead. Ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, cushion and sub-floor in the entire area are saturated.
Class 4 - Specialty Drying Situations
These consist of wet materials with very low permanence/porosity (hardwood, plaster, brick, concrete, stone, and crawlspace). Typically, there are deep pockets of saturation, which requires very low specific humidity.
Call SERVPRO of Western Lehigh County today if you experience any of these at anytime. We have all the certified equipment and staff to make sure your water damage is taken care of in no time at all. An untreated water damage can lead to mold growth and no one wants to go down that road.
How to Handle a Flood Before, During, and After.
8/12/2020 (Permalink)
We have been dealing with a lot of rain this summer. Which means many people will be dealing with some type of flooding issue. Floods can happen at anytime, and be caused from a variety of circumstances. Whether it's from all the rain we have been getting, or from an inside source in the building. SERVPRO of Western Lehigh County wants to provide a list of safety tips for before, during, and after a flood.
Before
- Make sure any cracks or openings to the building are sealed securely.
- Clean out all gutters, drains, and downspouts.
- If there is a sump pump in the building, make sure it is working properly, and have an automatic secondary backup. Sump Pump failure is one of the biggest causes of floods in basements.
- Create an emergency plan with a designated meeting place
During
- Move any valuables or items that you don't want damaged to a higher area.
- Shut off electrical, furnace, gas and water, and disconnect appliances if safe.
- If serious enough not only move items to raised area, but move yourself to higher ground or evacuate the building safely.
- Always remain calm and listen for any updates if the flooding is serious enough
- If you are driving never drive through moving water. Although you think you can make it, water is much stronger than you think.
After
- Clean, disinfect and dry every flood-contaminated room.
- Look for signs of mold contamination.
- Keep fans running to dry affected areas
- Remove pooled water and damaged materials
- Report the damage to your insurance provider and local municipality.
Hopefully these tips will help you stay safe when floods do occur. Don't forget that you can count on SERVPRO of Western Lehigh County to be there to help with all the after affect cleanup. This means removing any standing water, properly drying the water damaged areas, and making sure no mold begins to grow.
